Main Varieties of Mango Available in the UK
Tommy Atkins - Grown in Florida, South and Central America, this fruit has yellow skin with dark red to purple blush. It has a sweet, fruity flavour with mild hints of pineapples, peach and tangerines.
Kent - Grown in Florida, South and Central America and also The Gambia. Available all year round, this fruit is green even when fully ripe. Its deep orange flesh has an exceptionally rich, sweet flavour with tropical floral notes.
Keitt - Grown in Florida, South and Central America and also The Gambia. This lemon yellow fruit has interesting notes of coconut, berries and lime with creamy vanilla and peach flavours.
Haden - Grown in Florida, South and Central America and also The Gambia, this variety is bright yellow with crimson and yellow blush hiding golden orange, firm , smooth flesh. It has tropical aromas of peach and pinaeapple.
Parvin - This greenish yellow mango has a red blush on the skin with a firm, slightly fibrous flesh underneath.
Alphonso - Originating in India, this 'King of Mangoes' has yellow with pale green skin concealing smooth and creamy non-fibrous melting flesh. It is very sweet with undertones of vanilla and spice. Available mid April - May.
Kesar - This India mango has yellow skin with red shoulder blush and saffron yellow flesh. It is very sweet with a distinct saffron flavour. Available mid May - June.
Banganapalli - Available in early summer, this pale yellow skinned fruit has smooth maize coloured flesh with a pleasant aroma and sweet taste.
Chausan - From Pakistan, this mango has yellow skin with a green streak. Enjoy its very sweet flesh during June, July and August.
Sindhri - Canary yellow in colour, this Pakistani fruit is almost fibreless and is very sweet and aromatic.
Nahm Dawg - Available all year round, this Thai variety has greenish to canary coloured skin with smooth, soft, silky textures. It has a zingy citrus aroma with a juicy, sweet, aromatic flavour.
Super Haden - Grown in Venezuela and harvested during March, this mango is characterised by yellow skin with red blush. The flesh is very sweet and slightly fibrous.
Manila - This yellow fruit from Mexico is available from March - June. Its flesh is deep yellow, soft, juicy and fibreless with a sweet aromatic flavour.
Ataulfo - This Mexican variety is available from March - June. Its skin is green yellow to deep orange, with deep yellow coloured flesh. It has a spicy sweet, slightly acidic flavour.
Maya - Available from Israel from mid July and throughout August, it has yellow skin with red blush. The flesh is yellow and firm without much fibre, and is rich, sweet and mildly citrusy.
Shelly - Available in September, this Israeli mango has yellow skin with pink/red blush and slightly fibrous flesh.
Edward - Grown in Peru, Brazil and Ecuador and available from mid October to November. It has green/yellow skin, sometimes with red blush, and a fibreless, juicy and melting texture.
Kensington Pride - This Australia fruit has deep orange, soft, juicy, fibreless flesh under yellow skin. Its aroma has fresh citrus notes with flavours of peach, bananas and sweet grapefruit.
Heidi - Grown in South Africa, this yellow-skinned mango is very sweet with a slightly fibrous flesh.
Ruby - Originating from The Gambia, this mango has redish to yellow/orange skin hiding pale yellow to dark orange extremely juicy, slightly fibrous flesh. It has zingy citrus notes along with a very sweet and aromatic flavour.
